Probably because the TF-5 shaft was released at the exact moment that shaft-drive became as popular as Katie Price...
Kyosho had spent a while developing the shaft car - which was great - then had to rush out a belt version - which was terrible.
Similar problem hit them with the ZX-5. They took a while developing it while there were no real contenders in 4wd, then they debuted it at the worlds where the rear-saddle BJ4 and Yokomo dominated. The standard ZX-5 was almost immediately outdated.
Kyosho must have bought a faulty crystal ball...
