It sounds like a hard disk problem to me too, or more likely a problem with the connection (probably SATA) or the power going to the drive.
I have this recently, and deconnecting then reconnecting the SATA lead and power to the HD fixed it. It was on a large desktop PC though, so was easier to tend to.
Don't know how easy this will be to test on your laptop. Maybe remove the drive and put it back again.
Make sure the BIOS is setup properly, and recognising all your disks.
