Im returning to this after a loooooooong lay off, and I cant get round the track once without wiping out.

You need to do the same mate, there are people on here with years of experience, who will be better drivers than we will ever be will just stop helping you.
You need to listen to them, your xx4 is good enough, the only place you will know if it is no good for you is the race track, get to some races and lean both on the track and off.
