Firstly you didn't need a new esc - you can just replace the fan. New fans can be had from Maplin and fitting takes 5 mins with a soldering iron......
Still - I used the same Ezrun 9T with the 70A version of the same esc just fine. Running a motor on a higher current rated esc won't damage it so thats fine.
Most people just bashing about seem to favour brushless motors in the 8.5-10.5t region and the supplied motors in most RTR brushless cars fit into that group. One of the reasons for this is that you can then use 3S (11.1v) packs safely. Running 3S with a very fast 4.5t motor is likely to destroy the rotor as it spins too fast - they are only meant for 2S
However, having tried 3S (with the 9T and Orion in fact) I can safely say that its really only better for top speed and than only with a lot of space. Otherwise 7.4V (2S) is plenty.
