Chris, a few questions:
What is the motor timed at?
Can you hold WOT from the corner getting onto the staight away?
In general when you gear up a spec type motor you can use the torque if it's there. But if the motor runs out of torque the only way to get more speed is rpm. This is why timing comes into play.
