Sounds like there is the wrong material choice, and hardenning procedure going on, also, the gears should also be teflon coated too, to aid gear meshing.

As for belts, they should, in theory, last for ages, unless there is debris caught, or too high a belt tension to stop belt skipping on small idler pulleys.
