First of all, theoretically ball difs are a better choice with old motors and batteries. Less rotating mass increases power transmission efficiency while reducing resistance and car overall weight.

Obviously not everything could be as good. In this case continous need of adjustment and inherent weakness are the tails of the coin.

Nowadays car are faster than they could be with gear diffs, but yet need much more maintenance. Note to mention the lack of adjustments.

In my modest opinion, Geared diffs are the better option. We'll have to use a 4.5 or higher with 40c LiPo's, but our cars will be more reliable and confortable.
