Yes effectively you can create a spool by really tightening the diff. Although whilst tightening the diff you can ruin the diff balls and ring, it may still slip slightly and loosen over time.
A spool will be lighter and there is no chance of slipping as it is often a solid piece.
You can take out the diff balls in your diff, glue a bit of card (like you get on header cards) onto one side of each diff ring, assemble your diff back up with the card side of the rings facing the pulley. Tighten it up as usual and you will then have a spool.
1 piece solid spools can cause stress on your drivetrain when you crash, this way (with the card) won't because it will slip slightly in a crash, but behave like a 1 piece spool whilst racing
