There's always two sides to a story remember, being an F1 running at regionals can be hard work depending on who you are racing against and the flat out speed difference between different people. When there's a couple of seconds a lap difference between the top and the bottom of the final, the closing speed between cars can be really high and hard to react to.
Looking a the video of the track (wish I'd been able to go!) it looks like it rewarded being a bit steady, so there may have been cars in the final who didn't have the ultimate speed of the top few. Combine high closing speed with a tight/narrow track and you are going to get cars running into each other!
