If your servo worked better with your Novak than Tekin, there must have been a problem with the Tekin's BEC output, it shouldn't have affected the response of the servo otherwise.
The Novak HV-Max, which is probably what toooldskool's friend was using in his Losi 1/8th, is a different ESC which also has problems with AM radios because of RF interference.

But, that does not explain the problems with normal GTB (first gen.) with 40Mhz radio's.
