I don't know what diameter the motor shaft is but don't run it off centre, you'll probably strip the spur at least!
(I think the standard is 2.3mm so could be 2mm)
Once you have the right pinion that may help the cogging, do you have the link cable to connect it to a PC and download later firmware as that is meant to help too. I don't have one of these esc so can't help further I'm afraid, just don't run it til you have the right pinion.
