In the end, the information that gets passed from the receiver to the ESC is exactly the same, careless whether it is 2.4GHz or 40/35/27MHz, what may change, is the frame rate at which the data is passed from the receiver to the ESC, some of the new 2.4GHz systems are very fast, so the issue may be that the ESC is designed to receiver the higher responce signals, and it gets confused maybe. But that is just daft engineering.
