something around a 6.5 brushless would be a good starting point. Plenty fast enough but should still retain easy drivability (provided the car is set up as JCJC said).
Not sure the car will be as fast as your friends Nitro (depending on his engine etc), but it will accelerate much quicker meaning you should be able to lap the track in a similar time to him.
But as JCJC says which is great advice, if you plan to race at a local club, go and visit them and talk to the regulars first before you rush out and buy stuff.
I would personally give the mamba systems a miss as they aren't sensored. This means they can stutter a bit under acceleration. Try and go for a sensored system if you can, usually plenty of second hand ones on here.
