The standard shocks are very similar (size, length, pistons) as the rc10B4 shocks which they (tamiya) used on the prototypes. So if you can get some B4 shocks cheap they are a good idea..
Afaik the upgrade shocks they sell have longer shafts than the original 501X shocks so are too long (even though they are made for the DB01 - madness)

The kit shocks aren't great tbh, putting the smallest pistons in there and going up in oil weight might help but tbh the shocks are the main limit.. that said I raced the Durga twice with kit shocks and it went really well - though you could see where it lost a little time on the bumps / landings from bouncing around.
