Well, I did break one arm, but I was doing wheelies in the workshop at work and hit a table's leg... And strangely enough the arm broke exactly where the screw would have reinforced it. So yes the screws do help, but would I go as far as saying they're not necessary? No, I run them now just in case, can't hurt to have them in...
