Try it. You will only find out one way.

When I did touring cars I thought about painting a shell up in a steel colour with bits of rust on the door and bonnet joints. Then painting the shell on the outside too.
So that when it got hit and the paint on the outside flaked off, it left the rust and steel colour showing through!!

Never got round to doing it though. But it would have looked cool.
