Some pics are not well focused (1,2,4,5). Don't hesitate to make 500 pictures or more a day so you will have more chance to succeed.
Many people don't like flash (like me at the beguinning) because they don't really know how to use them. But when it's well done it's better with flash. If you can be close enough you can also buy a 50mm 1.8 or 85 1.8. I think you can only focus manually with your d40X. What's really cool with a flash is the "second curtain" (the flash burst just before the schutter closes, so you can see the blur of the speed and the car stays sharp).

First pic is made with this technique (i don't know if you can do it with your dslr), the second is made with a D300, 1600 ISO, +5IL, 1/320 S, 70-200 VR 2.8 at 105MM and no flash. With a flash it would have been far better !
