My lenses wont AF that terribly well indoors either, well not when the cars are within about 3m of the camera so I pick a spot on the track and take the picture as the cars reach that spot.
The lenses I use are only f4 so not that much faster than your's, i've shot f5.6 indoors before it just means you have to be better at panning or put up with some more noise.
