The differences are that in a Hot Rod you want a full 6 point cage to protect the driver and added structural rigidity to the car.
In a banger you want the car to absorb the impact - not the driver - hence only having a H frame (along with a door plate). Mind you a H frame made of 4" box section is still pretty sturdy. And of course in Hot Rods the speeds are higher too - although being lengthed flat out by a Toyota Cressida when I was sat in a Volvo 240 was plenty fast enough thanks.
