Depends what cells they are. We used to get away with this on NiCads, but they were built like brick outhouses compared to today's cells. If they're IBs, then the local recycling place is their best destination - I wouldn't trust them anywhere near a 12v without a good charger connected in between!
Don't know about EP or EnerG cells, but then again they don't usually die that easily. HTH
