The problem is shutter lag ashley. basically your camera takes a photo a split second after you press the shutter release.
SLR Cameras tend to have a very small lag, but non-slr cameras tend to have much longer lags which make it hard to predict.

The best way I found when I had a similar camera was to pan - but keep on panning and following the car AFTER you think you took the photo.
