Just to agree with the above, on my X5 (xx4 steering play) if I hold the car up and flick a wheel it judders around the neutral forever as the slop in the steering gives it momentum and it hunts back and forward continuously.
Put your finer against the servo horn and it stops, so you know it's not the servo internally doing it.
It is worrying though until you realise.
