The distance between the coils doesn't matter, it is the wire gauge and type, the diameter of the spring and the number of active coils that make the difference.
It has been a while since I ran the Kyosho but I could find no difference between the kit silvers and the supposedly stiffer "short" #75 bright green springs, I think one of the measured spring charts posted somewhere on here found that the kit #70 were actually stiffer.
Cut down dark greens do seem pretty stiff to me though, I know a few people used them a couple of seasons ago.
