You have to run the drive train in for a run or two and then it frees up. If you take the shims out it won't last for nuts!
When I built one for a friend we ran it in for about two hours with a crappy old motor hooked up to a tester. Leave it tight and see what it says after a couple of runs.

I checked last night, and there's just the one shim inside the casing behind the ring gear.
my biggest problem seems to be with wheel nuts at the moment - especially on the LHS front. they seem to loosen themselves under hard braking, and today it cost me 3rd in the a-final
