At Nationals, sure, control tyres are used- usually 2 types of tyre are chosen and you are free to choose a compound
At most tracks in the UK one tyre would be a Schumacher mini spike, the other usually a Ballistic Buggy mini spike. Places like Tiverton are different - where one American tyre is usually specced.
The tyres will be listed when the National venues are decided next year. Compounds


I've never personally tested the difference with different inserts - but a lot of people use what USED to be refered to as "snee blue", you can still buy these at nationals from a few different sources, not hard to find (but you cant buy them from snee any longer). Though I don't know where you'd buy them online - possibly Glyn Ward (brm motors)
