I think you should get a grip ....... 1mm makes a huge difference to those cars ..... also to our cars!
As for engines being tuned / checked by laptops what do you want them to do ... go back to carbs and a mechanical ignition advance?
My 89 Mini runs fully mapped, as does the better halfs (ok that's a 2000 and left the factory like that) and my 65 pickup will too
I think what you want to watch is classic racing .... or get Dr Who to take you back to the 60s / 70s where both your racing and points of view are valid
