Rather than drill a hole in the cover, use washers or a rubber o-ring between the cover and the gearbox so that it clears the pinion.

-Buy some 3Racing shocks (ebay $26 USD) The come with different pistons for adjustability and are super smooth. Way better than the more expensive Tamiya-offered...
