stripped diff gear...why?

I'm running a Core with 9T ezrun on 2s lipo and while just bashing it lost drive, after opening up the gears discovered this (see pic).....I'm not used to ball diffs :blush:

is this due to slipper...

messed with my mid range!

I meddled with the mid range on my hoboa mac 28 and have a gut feeling that I have read that setting it back to factory isnt just a case of turning back to flush with body? I believe this is the case...
