General Gearing Question

Would there be any effect / difference having a smaller spur and pinion on a car if the final gear ratio was the same.

e.g. car geared 80t spur / 16t pinion or the same car geared 70t spur / 14t pinion??

Both the above would give the same FDR but would it make any difference or just feel exactly the same to drive?

Thanks.

Smaller gears, smaller rotating mass, better acceleration of drivetrain (negligable!). Smaller diameter gears, greater frictional losses as geometry moves away from theoretical ideal (negligable unless silly small gears).

Soooo....I don't think it'll make much difference. :)

Although it could shift the motor in the car, this does make a difference;)

Yup - good point.

Yes weight distribution...thats what I was thinking.

certainly makes a difference in the b4, switching between a 78t and a 84t make the back end behave a lot differently.
