Regional / National Vintage Series
 

I've been thinking a lot about a vintage race series for older cars. As has been mentioned on other vintage threads, the older cars aren't generally able to run the modern brushless / lipo combos and as a result aren't as competitive against the new stuff. How easy / difficult would it be to incorporate a heat of vintage cars at regional and even national events and how popular would it be? What would the rules be on age cut off and modifications from standard versus modifications that were done in period. Could brushless be allowed but capped at a certain turn limit? Some modern aspects may want to be introduced to make life easier such as battery type (I'm sure no one would want the hassle of Ni Cads). Would the BRCA support it or would it have to run under organisation. I have worked in 1:1 scale historic racing, particularly the classic Group C sportscar series and the interest it creates because people remember the cars perhaps from when they were kids is awesome. I'm sure classic r/c would create just as much of a buzz if done right.

Car mods i would allow as they are for strength (hence why i design the carbon fibre tub chassis for the original lazer in 1990) and asthetically pleasing but performance doesnt change.

Motors i would allow a brushless limit of 6.5 and brushed 10t as they are roughly work out the same.

Batts any as tbh nicads dont last long, nimh dont have a long shelf life either and fabiix and panasonic, well i did drive for one of these and were utter crap so life span not long at all. If lipos can be used then great but not all cars fit lipos so would allow all.

Id be up for something but around surrey, there are several guys down here who would also be up for it in 2 and 4wd. Just a thought, maybe better to do a carpet series as these cars cant alway handle a full rebuild all the time as plastics do weaken.

We run a vintage series at my local club ( Caldicot ) normally from october to april once a month. It is brilliant, i love being able to run with and against cars i only dreamed of having when i had my first rc's.
What you mentioned would be really good and i'm sure you'd have quite a bit of interest after all the states have the VONATS.
All the guys normally run brushless normally 10.5-8.5 brushless which makes for good enjoyable racing (if you can call my driving racing!)and a very good laugh as well.:thumbsup:

You could not use NiCd cells now. The European Battery directive prevents their use in most applications and RC Car racing does not have an exemption.

NiMH could be used though.

Ill be up to a bit of classic stuff, i have an Top Force Evo to use and a optima Mid being rebuilt, with a parma brushed motor in good working order.

I loved the Top Force Evo I dug out an old RCMC the other week that has a review of Alan Harmans TRF Top Force. It has a Marlboro style paint scheme and is sponsored by Lotus (I believe the Lotus F1 team were sponsored by Tamiya at the time) its an awesome looking car. I looked at getting one to build a replica of this car but they fetch silly money these days

I have had mine from new, still have the box, instructions and two sets of unused orange wheels, but i don't race with those as there so rear. Think i will get an Egress later this year, now that's one car i wish i had not sold.

Check out Boughton Raceway under the club section, they are including a vintage heat in there summer series.

Maybe you should ask Alan if he still has his proto 4wd that he and Ellis used in the 90s, belt drive front belt, geared rear and was a designers wet dream at the time. Still looks good now.
