B4 ball diff.
 

I just dismantled my SC10 and took the ball diff out. The balls had melted into the plastic gear they are mounted in.
It would appear the ball diff was to wide for the gearbox case and it had bound up when built putting pressure on the diff, melting the grease that got thrown out and then got so hot the balls melted in to the plastic.
It used to be a gear diff, are ball diffs wider? Do they have different bearings?
The gear box case was fine, without balls it fitted and the case closed nicely.
It was only when fully built that the gearbox case wouldn't shut square and bound up.
I'm going to get another gear diff I think, it's not a race truck, I just need reliability.

Any thoughts on my issue?

You have pm. I can also supply you with a new gear box case and idler gear if needed.

I understood the ball diffs to be narrower, but is it a B4 or B4.1 ball diff that you have fitted?
(The original B4 diff outdrives use a different bearing size to the B4.1/SC10 and a different gear box casing)
Also if the diff was not adjusted correctly it could have overheated, was it slipping at all compared to the gear diff?

That's my problem then, the ball diff is from a b4 and I also have a b4.1 as well. Stuffs got mixed up. Although the alloy gear box case is from a b4 also the out drives may be b4.1.

All I really need is a Dave and a B4, life would be much simpler!
I've just stripped the SC10, all the hinge pins were seized and corroded, the rear arms bent, the ball diff seized, ball studs to tight!, and shocks need servicing. Surprised it still ran!!
