If it is swollen, no.

RudolfXC 03-03-2012 11:21 AM

I wouldn't recommend charging at 45A either.

Dave is an experienced racer although he has gone to educate our colonial cousins :woot:

If you look, it's a bit swollen, the 2 ends aren't touching the ground! Just not sure if that's in "normal" range though...Incould monitor it as u charge it I guess?

No fears on charging at 45A, always 1C for me!

df-03 03-03-2012 06:42 PM

if batterie is giving you enough power that you expect, then a little bit of swollen is no problem, i have 5300MAh 28c GP batteries (2 of them) and are both swollen but perform well and always charging 1c, funny thing but OT, that says "assembled in USA of US and foreign components" i think that only USA component there is that sticker :)

My losi stubby lipo swelled a little the first time I ran it, they seem to swell when running, fine when charging

DaveG28 03-03-2012 07:30 PM

Did you keep running it?

I just find it frustrating, I had some IP's that swelled when charged from new, and just web up and down depending how much charges as in them! They ran absolutely fine though!

Its hard to see how much this lipo is swollen from the pics or whether its just the shape of the lipo (it does have curved corners)

Normally you would tend to notice the lipo swelling upwards and you start to see the joint between top and bottom becoming further apart when swelling as this is the weakest point so first to show signs usually.

Best thing to do is keep a close eye on whether you think its getting worse and always charge in a lipo sack.

fidspeed 03-03-2012 09:12 PM

Thanks for pointing that out Dave
i would be happy using that if the pics is accurate it looks minimal to me i have a IP that is swollen too but it works OK

i thank sometimes we panic a bit too much about the frailities of lipos , in the old days ive had nicads and nimms let go and they werent fun either

keep an eye on it dave if your worried send it across the pond and ill check it out for you :D

Lipo swelling

If the li-po is swelling when charging at 1c and then you are drawing more than 1c on discharge, and you are.

What is happening to it ? ?

How long will it last before it becomes useless ?

If Li-po's were designed to swell up they would be in a larger case to allow for the swelling.

The one in the picture looks new - there are no scratches in the tubes and judging by the badly sized sticker partly covering the + symbol on the case the sticker cannot be the bit made in the USA. Its probably the fingerprint of the guy unpacking them after shipping from china ! :)

I did read somewhere that more and ore are swelling now because to get the higher capacity /c rating the cells are having to be bigger, but they are going in the same size case. Eg they always swelled a bit but it wasn't seen as the case had space. Anyone know if this may be accurate?

It would certainly explain issues in shorty packs, this pack has the same capacity and double the c rating of full size packs from only 2/3 years ago!

All I was trying to get at was, you are charging at 1c - say 5 amps and the lipo pack is swelling. What happens when you draw say 80 amps out of them in a burst ? More swelling ?

swappyd 27-03-2012 03:25 PM

Lipos always swell a bit when they have been used hard.
But they grow over the large surface of the cells and not at the edges.
Never really used hard cased packs much before.

I've never opened a hard pack so it would depend on how they are arranged in the case.
