Schumacher XLS / SWB Project

Ok so I own two early CATS the XLS below is in really good condition and not much to sort out. Rear role bar are missing and wing I dont think is the original one. Anyone no anythink about the paint scheme very retro but may do a Massi shell for it.

Annoyingly the origional owner lost the origional box and all the parts in a house move hence why I got it cheap. So I am now looking to restore this back to an SWB. Any help sourcing a non repro chassis and identifing the non origional parts would be appreciated. For example I dont think the gold rear shocks are origional. The top deck is a tanaplan I guess and maybe even procat as the steering fouls. The dayglow wheel are from an unknown source.

MattW 29-02-2012 10:21 PM

The rear shocks are Associated RC10 ones by the looks of it. The green wheels looks like they might be "Armark" (I think that was the brand) 2.2inch wheels.

The transmission side plates aren't original, as the std ones would be silver. Can't remember who made them - possibly tanaplan as you sugested about the top deck. The layshaft is Model Motor Sport (MMS) and the front diff looks like it's white, in which case it would be MMS as well.

Can't help thinking it's quite a way off being an SWB, so it's not going to be easy.

Steering looks like it has some non standard bits in it, but no real idea what.

First body looks awsome love it ....second
the green wheels looks awsome remember those from back in the days.

Think i have to get JC make some green wheels...

Transmission side plates are Schumacher, they were available as a spare part
U623T Trans. side plates black - Pro-Cat

Rear lower wishbone pivot bracket looks to be Procat

Upper chassis is Team Tanaplan XLS/Procat

The steering centre trackrod is non standard, looks too thick and not curved to avoid cotact with front pivot brackets

Hope this helps

I knew the pros on here would know about this car. The blue one is even less standard than I thought it was :-( I will start dismantling it in a couple of weeks and see what I find.

Those green wheels are definately more dayglow yellowy/green I just want some of those silver Schumacher ones.

Certainly SWB parts aren't easy to find infact I suspect I will never find them but I will have fun trying. As I have an XLS already having the second car in parts for a year or two isn't and issue. I can always resort to repro parts after that. I certainly can't afford to buy a nice SWB and if I could I would rather buy an SX3 and get back into racing.

The nice bright green wheels were Trinity ones also came in pink,.......come to think of it isn't it written on the wheel!!!!:woot:

That shell is sweet! Reminds me of Dangermouse's shell from Australia.

Good luck with the restore.

Fibre-lyte have the SWB chassis & top-deck on file.... unfortunately I don't think they can supply the 'white' coloured GRP material so would have to out-source this to send it to Fibre-lyte for cutting (there was another thread on this forum about suitable suppliers)

Of course you will need a shorter main drive belt, which you might be able to get made up from a specialist belt-drives factors.

Ebay & RC10Talk member 'Mr Lexan' also does excellent reproductions of the SWB shell

P.S; I too love the shell on your first car, very retro & for some reason reminds me of of the Phil Davies colour scheme/design, CATS are great cars but i'm afraid unless I get lucky they are too costly for me :(

Would SDPi have a suitable belt? I don't know the number of teeth needed for the SWB. I use 320 with my Procat and a front overdrive pulley. This one is MXL 300T 4.5mm wide neoprene.

The first car is fitted with a ProCat chassis and front end, the second also has a ProCat front. Both have ProCat front bumpers.

The second car also app[ears to have a MMS layshaft and front pulley, so chances are the rear diff is also MMS.

The first car looks like it might have a non-standard front pulley (it looks too light a colour to be standard), and the spur gear looks like a ProCat item, which means the rear transmission is probably all ProCat.

HTH.

Are you sure about this the chassis has six not seven holes like the Procat See http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_m...72455&id=23061

I will look at this I am reasonably confident most of this cat is genuine XLS and that some NIP were used when restoring it some of which may be Procat.

There lots about this car which shows how extended a life it had with non standard parts I have learnt more from the contributions above which is good. I suspect these are MMS parts.

I spoke to fibrelyte they said they would do the machining if I source some the material if anyone has experience of this. I am not interested in carbon but something that looks origional. Maybe the XL chassis could be shortened I haven't put much research into it. I believe it is about 20mm different but I am not sure. Hence the reason for asking some questions here.

Thanks for all the input so far.

That's the optional XLS saddle pack chassis, I have one on my XLS. The ProCat Chassis is wider and you wouldn't fit an XL/XLS under tray over it.

I really must get on with rebuilding all of my vintage collection

Fair point. A variety of optional parts were available at the time, so swapping the lower chassis between the cars will give something that's closer to a standard XLS. :)

I'll stick to the rest of what I said, and add that the shocks on the front of the XLS are too long to be the originals, as these used to mount on the inner 2 holes only (unless you wanted the front 'slammed'...)

steve_haskins 11-03-2012 10:17 PM

belts

im sure its 25mm
but mayne someone can correct me

if you source a belt let me know its the only bit im missing!

apart from the chassis and im going to order one
I have the front / rear end [narrow track]
the front fixed one way [no diff] and the old complex diff bits in the back

93works 31-03-2012 10:22 PM

nice car indeed. my question is what aftermarket part's were available for the short wheel base in 86, before the xl and xls came around

Copied from RC10talk...

I wonder would this fit...

A 6Z16M298045 from sdp-si.com

https://sdp-si.com/eStore/PartDetail...54&GroupID=342

It's 4.5mm wide, which is a bit wider than the kit item (4mm)

I never had a SWB but I found the manual online...

If I find some black or silver ones that aren't repro you can have them. All about going origional for me. Thanks everyone for the advise so far will get on dismantling the blue one and ask some more questions.

The Procat chassis has seven holes in the the XLS has six from what I can tell so its easy to tell appart. The procat one is also a lot bigger. at the back.
