HELP! Full size car tax issue..
 

Has anyone any experience of getting their car taxed without a valid V5 logbook? I've recently bought a 2nd hand car and it needs taxing pronto but I don't have the right registration docs. If you have any idea how to do this, I'd be really grateful if you could email me: [email protected]

You can use the V5C which is the little slip you should have got when you bought the car. Take that with your MOT and insurance certificate and you can get your tax disc.

Rule number 1 - never buy a car unless it comes with all the right documents. You could be heading for a whole heap of problems!

When I did that the lady in the post office looked at the little slip of paper I handed over and then asked to see the whole V5! Cue 20 minutes of me trying to explain to her that you can tax a car on the V5C and her telling me you can't until her boss came back from his lunch break and told her you can!!

Could always try doing it online using the car registration and that way they can also check that the car is insured and MOT'd :thumbsup:

You also need the V5 reference number, tried doing this myself as I have just bought a car (with a V5) but stupidly decided to send all the details off to put my private plate on even tho its due taxing tommorow:lol:. I have confirmation that the plate is now on the car but cannot tax it until I get the new documents.

Don't know if it's still the case, but you could always tax a car on an application for a new v5 form

Only if your the registered keeper and only at DVLA local offices (not post offices).

The advice I had from the DVLA in Swansea was that it would take around 4 weeks for them to re-register the car in my name and only then would I be able to tax it!

So I went to my local DVLA office (Leeds) and they sorted it in next to no long (as long at it took me to queue). They took my application to re-register (which is free) but were happy to tax it in the meantime. Really good service.

Oh and the Government are closing all regional DVLA offices next year! Madness - the place was packed.
