Old Schooler getting back into racing

Hi everyone

I'm currently going through the process of buying my kit for club racing after a 15 year break. I'd like to race with you guys as I'm based in Woking and you guys look like a nice bunch.
Anyway, I'm gonna be purchasing a Team Durango DEX410R v3 with Tekin electrics.
Does anybody else run the 410 at the club?
Also what age ranges race, I'm 35.

Cheers

Mike

woohoo.

Well done for making the right decision, I was away for 22 years and came back to it last year, loving it.
Yes we are a good bunch at SHRCCC, Myself(Darren) and Neil(dudders) are always welcoming new members/racers and you have made a great car choice.
The Duragos go well and there are plenty at the club.
Plenty of people happy to help with set up etc if needed and only things you need to know are
1, lipos must be in lipo sack for charging.

2, transponder prefered but not needed at the moment as we can amnually count you.

3, Make sure you have fun and enjoy yourself.

Also, Tyre wise, minipins from shumacher(yellow) and ballistic(white) work well indoors as a start point. Althou the Rango drivers may give different advice.

See you one thursday evening.
Darren...

Age wise I don't think you will be much older or younger than most.
For example I'm 39 and Neil must be in his 50's :p

I feel it! You've aged for 39!

TARTMAN 17-02-2012 07:38 PM

LOL

Yeah age wise, I am 40 and its a mixed crowd, so all fit in well.....

some juniors/young, teenager and upwards, as well the older lot. Age is just a number! Its your thumbs that count.:thumbsup:

Ok thanks guys, sounds really good, hopefully I'll pop down in the next couple of weeks. Cheers!

Shame I missed the boat with visiting the indoor venue, I like the sound of the outside astroturf new track though. Will the racing be on this in the winter too? Haven't quite ordered all my bits yet but should hopefully be ready to race in April.

Dudders 23-02-2012 05:24 PM

Yes, understandable but for us it'll really help

See you when we go outdoors!

mikejwright 29-05-2012 09:53 AM

Well I popped along to your new track on Sunday just gone and I was really impressed, but also a bit daunted! its very different to when i was racing 15 years ago! Made me realise I just wanna get back into it asap.
Currently putting my car together so hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be able to come down with a car.
Just a quick question, what do I do about a transponder? shall I buy one? how does it work at the track? any particular one I should buy?

Cheers

Mike

pt

you dont have to have a pt to start racing, we can count you, but its alot easier of you do get one.

£48 new approx for an MRT one. there great.

£76 for a mylaps(harry) a bit smaller....

or look for a used one. £40 ish.......

see you soon.

Dudders 29-05-2012 11:14 AM

Don't let the pace and seriousness of Sundays meeting put you off, was a twice a year regional meeting.

mikejwright 29-05-2012 11:37 AM

Ah thats good then, I wondered how I would ever keep up with that racing!
How many people tend to race during club meeting? I'll be racing a 4wd. :)

I now have my Durango DEX410Rv3, gonna start building it this week, just need to buy my electrics etc now. I think i'm gonna go for the Tekin system, gonna run a 6.5 or 7.5 turn motor, is the RS pro esc worth the extra money I can I make do with the Tekin RS esc?
Also what is the best stick tx and rx to purchase. I'm currently looking at the Futaba 2.4g system but concerned that the rx wont fit in the 410R.
Any advice appriciated, thanks guys.

mikeyscott 01-06-2012 10:29 AM

Tekin is really nice kit that I have had.

Give Kev Lee a shout [email protected]

He sells it, tekin team driver and general nice bloke.

I'd go 7.5 and he also does some combo deals. If I wasn't running Orion I'd go Tekin again.

Also don't forget Tekin Hotwire, but Kev can help with details etc.

As it's 4wd go for Pro

Re radio Sanwa all day long, but not cheap! Tekin esc are v nice and small so done nice and tidy, space not an issue

Re PT either AMB/MRT but get one as it makes racing much better and also other clubs may not do manual counting or have handouts

Thanks for the advice mikeyscott. Well my 410R is almost built now, just need to build the shocks and then I'll have a rolling chassis.
Just ordered a Tekin Redline 7.5 and a 23t pinion. Will this combination be ok for the track?
I've also ordering schumacher yellow mini spike tyres, hope these will be ok for the astro.
Still deciding on what tx.rx system to go for, I'd like a stick set but with a micro receiver, and I cant find any brand that does that!
So hopefully in a couple of weeks I can come down to the track and slowly get back into it again.

Hi Mike,

Pinion choice will work, I used a 22t with a 7.5 motor with 0 degrees of timing.
Tyres are a good choice for dry weather running, would advise trimming off at least the inner and outer row on the front. I ran cut staggers on the front for consistancy, but the track grip levels are forever changing and will continue to do so untill it settles down, and I cannot tell you when that will be.
I have only ran a wheel tx but I do know that the Spektrum DSM2 SR3520 with the LRP SXX esc fit onto radio tray perfectly. If you get a module tx at least you can change it to Spektrum module and run that rx. Im sure Simon at RC Lazy was selling a micro reciever that ran on the Futaba system, dont know the name or costs etc but if you give him a call I'm sure he will sort you out, or any of the LMS.
Any thing I can help you with just ask and I will be happy to give you any advise I can.

mikejwright 11-06-2012 07:45 PM

Thanks neil_p, i really appreciate your advice.
Well I have the kit built now and today the postman gave me the tyres, pinion, lipo and motor. So I can continue the build, just waiting for a tekin rs pro to be in stock somewhere and then I'll prob get the futaba radio system too subject to my photo gear selling on eBay.
