First day on the track with our Mad Monkeys
 

Hi all

Just want to write a little about my first experience with an Ansmann car.

In October an offroad indoor track opened close to where I live. Haven't driven an 1/10 2wd buggy in almost 20 years, my brother and I decided that we would try it again.

We just want to have fun, and so we decided to go cheap, and bought a Mad Monkey each. Only upgrades are ball bearings and tires.

This tuesday was set to be this first day we tried our new buggies.

The good part is that we had a really fun time, driving our cars. They felt good to drive, and we were able to control them.

The not-so-good part was that my brother managed to break 3 different parts in the front, in three different situations. The trackowner is a Team C dealer, and my brother was able to get new parts each time (we knew that, and we decided on Ansmann partly because of it). He also popped his front dampers, but that was expected.....

I hadn't any serious accidents, but in the end one of my CVD's fell apart, and I lost the small "thingies" that keep it together.

Basically we are not that miffed about it. All 2wd buggies seem rather vulnerable in the front, and wooden planks are hard. So if you drive into them at almost full speed, something is bound to break.

But it does leads to a couple of questions :confused:.
Can you get parts for the CVD? It seems a little silly to pay 20£, for 2 tiny pieces of metal
I think the servo horn looks fragile. Is it something you would replace, and with what?
We knew the dampers weren't up to driving on a track filled with jumps. Do these make a good replacement: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?product_id=33115 ?

Hi peter,
re cvd's..one of mine fell apart,it was the small tiny silver pin that i lost..but the wheel pins fit!!...if you lost the ring that holds it to you could use a small zip tie?..or heat wrap?

For a pair of brand new madrat/mad monkey cvd's theres a seller selling geniune parts for £6.49 a pair. He has loads in stock

Re. CVDs, isn't there two metalpieces inside the cup? I have the ring, but it seems that there are missing more than just a pin? :confused:

no its just a pin that goes straight through and is held in place by the ring...

Yeah There the ones im on about. For £6.50 you could afford to buy a few for spares

only ever broken drive shaft [ pin fell out ] and wishbone the car is great value for money, all my spares are from this ebayer ,top seller great prices 10/10 fast postage. Still running standard diff with a 6.5t motor. I have only put 5 bearings part No 125000449,thrust race and found this to be very smooth.

Might be worth looking into buying some X2C parts. I think the X2C CVD's are made of harder stuff and are built for higher power setups. They do cost a bit more but if it saves replacing them all the time and keeps you in the race.
I think its worth a punt.

Are you all using the standard servohorn - does it hold up, in the long run?

I use 3racing 2.6mm horns in all my ansmann models

I think the 75mm would be ok for the front, and circa 90mm for the rears.

I have a full set of X2C alloy threaded shocks and spring you can have for £35 posted. I run big bores on mine so dont need them :D You can see them in the pictures on modelsport

pro4nut on here is selling a set of X2C dampers new unbuilt in packet for £30 in another thread. direct bolt on for a madrat, and excellent fully threaded shocks.

I wouldnt worry about the servo horn.
The shocks are good. I've not tried them but my friend has with no issues.
When you get new cvds try putting a bit of super glue on the retaining ring that keeps the "thingies" in place. Dont over do the glue. Its a common problem.

I have been running an almost identical setup to you for the last couple of months. I have been really impressed! its proved to be easy to setup and drive and holds its own against all the other big makes!
