im just cheking really i have just assembled front and rear diffs. on the front when i rotate the front right wheel forward the left front wheel goes backwards, i know this is correct but on the rear diff i move the right wheel forward and the left wheel also goes forward. the rear diff isnt too tight but should the left rotate opposite like the front.

Yes, the rear diff should do the same. If you hold the spur gear, regardless weather the diff is a bit tight or not the wheels should rotate in opposite directions when turning one.

umm the only thing i can think ofis that i used used hex washers rather than friction paper. if it is not that any ideas

Shouldn't make any difference. If the diff is a bit tight you will need to hold the spur, otherwise you'll just turn the entire drive train rather than see the diff action. If you've no motor fitted to provide some resistance in the drivetrain, I'd expect the whole lot to turn anyway.

no motor fitted, if they should run opposites ill have to take apart i guess.

Post some pictures of it when apart just so we can see if all the correct parts are there :)

Pics may help as stu has suggested, but things to check are that everything is fitted and serviceable. Ie thrust race is here and in good condition, Belleville washers are there and not flattened (if they are flat, you will go from a diff that's too loose, to one that's too tight with no real adjustment inbetween), and something else I thought of, are the diff balls the correct size.

Does it feel right but tight if you turn one wheel one way and the other the opposite? Or is it just locked up?

Just taken the whole thing appart, definately assembled correctly and tightened correctly. All ball bearings the right size and all lubricated.

outside of the side plates i turn the right one forward and the left one goes back. inside of the plates with all three belts on with correct tension when i move the right side and stop the belts moving i get the correct combintation.

i get a little forward motion on the belt if i leave go of it when moving forward or backward does this mean the diff is still too slack.

or is it still wrong :)

From what you say, could be a little loose. I'd expect it to turn the belts over with no motor fitted or you not holding the belts.

What you need to do now is hold the spur gear and one wheel, then try to turn the other wheel. You're looking for a reasonable amount of resistance before the diff slips.
