s500 - gear diffs?
 

not sure if it's common knowledge but a little bird just tweeted in my ear it has geared diffs, like rallyx cars and so tunable, is this true, :thumbsup::confused:

They have a geared differential for their S400 touring car (see here), so it's not unreasonable to think they'll do the same with the S500.

I certainly hope that they do :thumbsup:

New for the Serpent S400 is this innovative 35T rear gear differential. Designed with competition in mind, this new diff is only 5 grams heavier than the standard ball differential yet provides more consistent operation and there is absolutely no slippage, which helps improve acceleration. Another benefit is that it requires little or no maintenance or rebuilding and it can be simply set by just changing the oil. To keep the weight down, the differential is supplied with coated aluminium out drives and to get you on the track as quick as possible, the diff comes pre-assembled, with you only needing to add oil. Expect a front gear differential in the near future

endlessly tunable buy oil weight inside, just as in rally x
heaver oil more limited slip action the diff will provide etc and vise versa

Sounds like my kind of car, along with a brushless motor/speedo it will equate to virtually maintanance free racing!!

Why have other manufacturers not gone down this route though?:confused:

Ball diffs I think in this car, but they might bring out some geared jobbies later? who knows.

who wants a diff in the front anyway....

one-way is where its at!

after all how many rally x cars have them

From what I've heard it will come with standard ball diffs out of the box but they are working on a gear diff option too.

your talking about a spool, either that or I can't figure out how you plan to get the freewheel action of the one-way with gears and thick oil?

also, how many rallycross cars are faster than a 10th scale car, even on 8th scale tracks 10th electrics are normally faster unless its like the moon.

8th cars are so heavy they need something really tough and durable to last the long finals.

I am sure the geared diffs will be quite good, but at no point raicng my 10th cars have I ever though, hmmmm, I would love to make my diff do this but I can't with a ball diff

So true, i would never really "want" a geared diff over a ball diff, and i have only ever ran a diff in my 4wd once, 1 way all the way for me:thumbsup:

but u can have a centre oneway roller like the bj4
and still have the tuneability of the geard diffs

I see what your saying carl but its still not a proper 1 way and personally i dont see the advantage of having a geared diff, and all the oil crap would just do my head in:cry:

The geared differential I linked to is for the rear of the S400, although the blurb does state "Expect a front gear differential in the near future".

I agree that a geared differential for the front of a 4wd buggy is not much use, given the preference for one-way units, but could be a good idea for the rear (due to the reasons Serpent have outlined).

but that is nothing like a one-way diff, both wheels are still joined together by a diff even though they do free-wheel.

part of the fun of the one-way is that both front wheels can free-wheel independantly of each other for maximum rotation and turn-in.
