[SEMI] realistic damage paint
 

I'm sure I'm not the first person to come up with this idea by a long shot but I've never heard of it before so I'll put this out there :thumbsup:

Had the idea a while back to paint up my SC so it showed battle-damage - these things are supposed to be a bit of fun and scale looks after all.. Now of course a real short course truck isn't going to have a body made of any sort of metal I'd guess, but that's a point we don't need to worry about here :)

Basically I sprayed the inside (masked windows first) with a chrome-type paint. I actually masked the outside of the windows with the full-sized window masks and then created a smaller window mask for the inside so my chrome paint would end up creating a nice window border when I'd finished the paint.

For the outside I had the idea to create a nice matt-black look - I was going to use some matt / semi-gloss car paint I had laying around until I got hold of a can of the Tamiya PS clear-matt spray, which you can spray over the outside of any body and make it matt....... When it came down to it though I didn't have any normal black, or certainly not enough to cover the huge short course shell so I ended up using the semi-gloss paint I had laying around. The spray can was a bit tired and old so didn't spray great and I was a bit disapointed with the finish - you'd get a much nicer finish using a normal / gloss black and then coating it with the Tamiya matt-clear.

After I sprayed the black I added a little bit of rust/dist detail along with picking out a few of the roll-cage details on the back of the shell. All sprayed on the outside.

I finished the shell off with some custom-designed plotter-cut vinyl decals - including drift-stylee for the right hand side and clear-coated everything again with the Tamiya matt-clear spray so the stickers weren't shiny.

The idea ofcourse is that the body will get rubbed / scuffed up and show through some silver battle-damage - possibly making it look a bit TOUGH! haha.
I guess I could have sprayed it brown/rust colour first on the outside, then the black - meaning I'd have a nice rusty outline round any scrapes - or I could have sprayed a lot more colourful design on the outside and either clear coated it matt or gloss for the finish desired - maybe that's next.

It's not been run yet - only scratched with a fingernail for fun - obviously if all the paint falls off with the first crash I'll delete this thread and pretend it never happened. But I think it should be 'a bit cool' once it's had a couple of races and been attacked by some other trucks.

nice job, the tamiya paint is what it's all about with the matte finish.

don't forget that the inside will get scratched too, if you only have a tin layer on the inside, it will quickly run away. especially on both wheel wells; and any/all impact areas. you can use shoe goo and drywall tape on the inside to toughen up the body, to make it last longer and also to protect the paint from the inside :)

Good point - I didn't spend much time on it as I was doing it at midnight :woot: but I meant to clear coat it on the inside - I'll have to brush something over now I've unmasked the windows :yawn:

Will be interested to see how it turns out. Terry mentioned doing something this along time ago but I don't think he got around to it although I'm not sure on that ?
