Making Body Shells

hey everyone,

this question is mainly aimed at Jim and G about these low profile S2 shells that was made, ive just purchased a Heat Gun from ebay to use to melt the coke shells ( plastic ) over the wooden molds is that the best way of doing it ?

josh_smaxx 11-02-2008 10:12 PM

Me and some mates used a vacuum machine at school making wings and shells, great fun but we never got them quite right  never thought of using coke bottles and a heat gun, maube something to try in the future for my own wings.

That would be a great substitute for heat shrink. And it will save me having to go out and buy some. I have loads of coke bottle at home.

Research is definitely needed into whether or not jack daniels in the coke affects the quality of moulding at all, will drink JD and coke for the good cause of testing, send PM's.

ive thought about making a mould for a shell of my own design, not sure what the best material would be to make one out of though i've considered wood so far as i have access to a vacform and the polycarbonate or lexan

xx4-nutter 13-02-2008 12:01 AM

block of wood, set of basrtard files, sand paper and an £11.00 heat gun from ebay...

im sure theres somwhere you will be able to get 1mm thick plastics from

ashleyb4 13-02-2008 12:11 AM

Use layers of balserwood trimmed to close shape then sand.

layers of balserwood ? youd need to use glue and heat and glue dont mix.

one block of wood is fine. :eh?:

Mike Hudson 13-02-2008 02:08 PM

as long as it's not longer than the car otherwise it will look ridiculous

b4rs 13-02-2008 02:21 PM

low13 14-02-2008 06:24 PM

i read tht review of the pirahana p2 didn't he use coke bottles there was a link on the boards to a guide on how to do wings it was a german site but in english i think if not the pictures gave me the idea.i tested it out with an old coke bottle and mums hairdryer worked shrank alright i haven't got round to making a mould i will though cos i like the look of the arishi shells but non fit my b4 so that maybe and option also i'm working on extending an rc18 wheelbase so would need a body for that longer chassis

mattym0310 15-02-2008 09:42 AM

mdf is good for a vacform mold i think

LEGEND 15-02-2008 04:10 PM

Yeah MDF is great for moulds on a vacumme former. The school I go to uses it for all of their moulds. I have even made a mould for a wing. It turned out very good but the only downside was the plastic sheets my school has to use . I think it is polythene or something like that. All i know is that it is very brittle. I will get a pic up sortly of my mould.:)
