Spoked vs Dished Wheels

I have searched (here and google), but can't find an answer.

Why do most cars run disc wheels instead of spoked wheels?

Is it a performance thing, or is it an availability thing, or is it just a style thing?

I've used both, jconcepts spoked wheels are cheaper but when running outside allows more crud around the hubs i used spokes indoor and dished out door :)

No difference in my opinion.

I use both dished and jconcepts wheels to good effect.

The jconcepts are better value for money

can't snag anything with a dished wheel, other cars (wheel nuts), scenery, mud, stones, marshals.........

I've run spokes for years now mainly because IN MY OPINION they look better, but recently I've started to like the look of the dished wheel. I haven't found them to let in anymore dirt or grass. On the flip side they could let the dirt out just as easy as they let it in.

I think it's just personal preference really.

spokes are better for disc ventilation ;-)

Wheels

I've used both and the only difference I've found is the dished wheels are easier to clean. Saying that, whilst running on a grass track I got a stick stuck in the spoked wheel!

haggis 29-09-2011 10:11 PM

where can i get spoked wheels for a b4,1?

Dazzler 29-09-2011 10:25 PM

theyre not bad at all. would have to paint them silver tho

always liked the old hpi super star wheels.

Dazzler 29-09-2011 10:37 PM

You could always have some custom dyed wheels if you don't want yellow or white...

not unless you fit 12mm hexes to the axles, even then I'm not sure the offset would be right

Steven Forster 30-09-2011 11:10 AM

anybody tried running 12mm hexes on the rear of a B44 ???

Can you fit the front hexes onto the rear ???

cheers

Richard Lowe 30-09-2011 01:44 PM

There's a couple of options on the way for hex wheels on AE cars... ;)

I believe its a manufacturing thing. It is cheaper to make dished wheel tooling and you dont have to worry about flashing between spokes.

Really - it's just something that came out of the old-school loamy tracks we ran on 20 years ago, especially the bigger races, and guys using stick-on discs to keep their spoked wheels from being fouled and out of balance with packed mud or dirt chunks. Spoked wheels had been the industry standard, and I think they just evolved away (other than PL) over time.
I could be wrong, but I think Losi was the first to offer solid disc wheels as the "option/aftermarket" wheel for their original JRX2.
(orange, hot pink, optic yellow)

Personally, I've always liked having the option or running either (if conditions allow) - because I feel it affects sidebite, that spoked wheels disturb the air/disc wheels slip through easier, and I use it as a tuning aid. But it's still a very small difference.
