Bulk tyre removal
 

I've got a shed load of B44 and SC10 wheels which need the knackered tyres removing. Normally I use a large-ish glass jar with a lid and do a couple of wheels at a time - but with the quantity that need doing I can't be arsed.

What I need is a bucket with an airtight lid. Looked on ebay but wasn't sure what is suitable. Don't want to buy something that then disintigrates when I put acetone in it.

Suggestions please? What are the containers made of that acetone is stored & sold in?

put 'm in the oven and 'bake' the glue so it's brittle and doesn't stick anymore. (it smells awfull, be aware)

Would rather use acetone in the shed than stink the house out thanks.

paint tins usually work well.

it you cut off most of the tyre so only the bead is left on the rim then you can squeeze quite a few in at a time.

you still don;t need much acetone as the fumes of pure acetone do the trick almost as quick.

I use a lunch box with clip and seal lid. I can get 8 buggy wheels in there at a time... they probably do larger ones in *insert chosen supermarket* too

i tried the clip seal lid tupperware things, but i found the acetone evaporated really quick as it must have eaten through the rubber seal. Do you not get that?

Was looking at the tins of cooking oil you can get in the wholesalers - but they all seem to have tear off lids rather than a lid you can bang down.

Did think about a paint tin - means chucking the paint away lol.

Plastic is easiest option - how about a decent size beer making bucket? Surely that would handle the acetone?

I just use a large flat seal-able tub that I bought at the dollar store. It's intended use was probably food. The acetone doesn't eat these. I can put 8 or 10 buggy wheels in at a time. Here's a walkthrough of how I do it:

It's probably worth buying a few similar containers, and testing if the acetone eats it or not. For the record, I've never had a food container react poorly to acetone.
(however, cleaning brushes in a plastic/disposable drinking cup, that's another story. :P)

1 litre ice cream tubs! can fit 4 or 6 wheels at a push...cut the tyre away for quickest results!

My other half has a restaurant...so goes through them at a silly rate...and has a collection of plastic tubs that's even bigger than my used wheel and tyre collection!

Mesh in the botom to keep the wheels and tyres clear of the liquid and let the fumes do their thing.

Loads of those cheap plastic sealable storage boxes at £ Stretcher or similar - they always have them stacked up outside :-)

Same here, been using the same acetone for about six months, bit dirty but still does the trick....

what acetone do you use? and where from...

i tired it with nail polish remover left it for about 3days the tyres started to come off.. but not fully i got impatient and ended up ripping the tyres i was trying to get off lol?

If you are trying to save the tires, instead of the just the wheels, the Acetone method may not be best. I think it makes the tires pretty nasty. The oven way would work best for saving tires.

First post does say the tyres are knackered.

I just use an acetone nail varnish remover from my local beauty salon wholesaler. 24 - 48 hours in the fumes and job done.
