Acetone Storage..

what do most people use for putting there acetone in ??
bought 2 containers yesterday and my acetone is evaporating at a very high rate and thats just over night so need something that will actually air tight seal it ..

any ideas ?

cheers

i just use an old coffe tin. It is completely sealed and water proof. But then again i only use nail vrnish remover to get my tyres off. So pure acetone might eat away at the tin faster.

it has to be an airtight container, and store it somewhere nice and cool, also, try not to breath in the vapour either.

So whats the best way to get the tyres out? Im guessing it will be an irritive?

GRIFF55 06-02-2008 09:26 AM

I keep mine in an old sweet tub, like haribo. Seems ok to me, i have spare if you want one wraggy, you can only fit four wheels in each mind.
Let me know

theoreticaly, you should be wearing gloves to protect your skin, as you will find, it will suck all the oil out of your skin, and if you got a break in the skin, or a cut or skin problem, it will sting like hell.

We used to use if for cleaning aircraft components, it is evil stuff, also the vapour is ery flammable.

And you only need a small amount in the bottom, like a cm or so? How long does it take? Mines still at my rents house, forgot about it

Wraggy 06-02-2008 09:32 AM

i always found i had to submerge mine totally when i used to do it .
a cm in the bottom never used to work ???
and griff i have about 100 rims to do mate :woot:, thanks for offer but would be there forever ....

Southwell 06-02-2008 09:37 AM

Hmm, i thought the vapors should do it pretty well? Ive got a couple hundred lying around lol.

GRIFF55 06-02-2008 09:42 AM

Why don't you get a few of them clear plastic storage containers Paul, you know the ones with different colour lids available? Their quite cheap too!

are they are tight though Griff ??
bought a couple of 4 litre containers yesterday with clamp lids but there is no seal around the top to make air tight ..

GRIFF55 06-02-2008 09:57 AM

Not sure on that one, but you could always run a piece of bike innertube around the inside lip of the lid?

Jamie B4 06-02-2008 10:00 AM

Acetone

Wraggy, dead easy use an old clean paint tin etc,(nothing plastic cos its a solvent) and dont forget the bigger the tin the more acetone, so try and use the vapours. You should use gloves and do this in the garage etc also becareful cos with cheap gloves the acetone will melt straight through

Wraggy 06-02-2008 10:02 AM

Thanks jamie , so will the vapours alone strip the tire and glue off the rim then ?? and how long should i leave in for ??

GRIFF55 06-02-2008 10:07 AM

My acetone has been in a plastic container for nearly a year!! not melted yet:lol:. I guess some types of plastic will be more susceptable to melting than others. Try a bit in the bottom of what your using if its not tin is the answer i suppose.

big ice cream container, sealed lid, my gallon has lasted over 2 years and still some left....i leave mine submerged for 24 hours then take the tyre remains off and soak for another couple of hours to get rid of any glue left , save them all up chuck them in washing machine with a couple of old towels on low heat and come out like new

I've found that the vapours are enough, a cm or so in the bottom then just fill the container with tyres. Leave it about 3 - 5 days and your done.

re

On mine I have the tin about half full can fit in 4 wheels and leave them for over night then find that the excess rubber just drops off, I tend to cut the tyres off and remove the inserts so there is only the rims left. Got 2x 1 litre containers, 1st for first putting the wheels in and the 2nd for cleaning the wheels up once the rubber is off. I'll be at Kiddy on sunday if you want advice

Paul.
Where did you get the Acetone from. Postage very pricey.
I use one of the very large saucepans like they use at schools. Put some foam around the lid to stop it evaporating and put a large weight on top.
Are you at Kiddy on Sunday.
Mark

Griff, you must have a polythene plastic container like the wash bottle types but becareful and have a look at the msds sheets on net for correct handling etc
