511 steering servo choices??
 

Hello!

I was hoping people here would share their knowledge on what is the current selection of top of the line servos suitable for 1/10 4wd electric buggy, specifically for the Tamiya TRF511.
I am getting ready to build my 511 kit and would like to purchase the best possible steering servo for it. I know it has to be a low profile servo and thats about as much as I know. I'm not sure about what the max dimensions that will fit. Some makes and model numbers of the best servos currently available for this particular application would help me tremendously. Thanks.

Sanwa SDX-801 bar none. Best low-profile servo I've ever driven. Sits in all my 1/10 cars.

Also called Airtronics in americanism, but no idea what modelnumber is goes under.

The savox low profile servos are good too, excellent value.

The Sanwa SDX-801 is an excellent servo indeed, but some drivers feel that 6.5 kg/cm at 6 V may be on the weak side for a 4WD. Sanwa considers this a touring car servo, but it is strong enough for 4WD.

I am one of them who wants a slightly stronger servo and therefore run the Futaba BLS551 in my 511.

Thats it!?

Sanwa and Savox?? Nothing else fits except maybe a Futaba Servo??
What about JR? Do they make a decent low profile servo suitable for 4wd applications that will fit TRF511??

I'm trying to compete with guys who will all have top of the line gear in their cars, and I doubt they are going to skimp in the steering servo area of the car. I dont want to be that guy at the track blaming his slow lap times on his slow and weak steering servo. There has to be more choices then just 2 different servos. If not, then I'll just have no other options other then to buy an Airtronics servo (thats what they call Sanwa here in the US).

Orion also do a low profile servo, as do KO I think...

Yes, both KO Propo and Team Orion have low profile servos, as do Hitec and Spektrum. There are several options, do not worry about that.

However, the preferred choice is either Sanwa or Futaba. If you for any reason would not like a servo from Sanwa or Futaba, get one from Team Orion. I consider Savöx servos a step below, but then again they cost less so I am not saying they are crap, just that there are better things out there.

I know people who still run their Futaba S9550 albeit they are several generations old. Quality pays off, especially for servos. My Futaba BLS551 is now two (outdoor) seasons old but its gears still feel like the day I opened the box it came in. It is very quick and has a precise and exact feel. That is why I recommend it to others.

The corresponding Airtronics servo to the Sanwa SDX-801 is called Airtronics 94746M :

I'm using a low profile Orion and it's brilliant VDS-1009 i think.

i know others use the 1251 savox with no issues too.

Am using a low profile futaba s9551 and very happy with it

Ive been running a KO 2413ICS for a couple of years without any problems in my 511. Used one in my TC and now running another in my 2WD too :thumbsup:

What Hitec's you running now Lee? The high volt ones?

Really like the KO2413, kind of use to it now so use i ton everything.

Have to say, the HB ones I used this year were the best I'd ever had, really fast and strong! Next favourite was the sdx801, never had a servo centre as well as that! I'm using the SRG-BL now, not yet convinced it's better than the 801!

I had 2 KO2413's fail on me in one season.

Both the same failure mode - they lost torque.

Checked all the gears etc and they were fine. servos worked when car was in mid air but with wheels on floor they struggled to turn.

Switched to a Savox 1251 and it's spot on...!

in ko's the motors fail after a while normally, had it in a 2123 but it was over 3 year old, loose the torque, that's what that sounds like neil, same symptoms;) 2 of them in 1 season though sounds strange:o. still use a ko pds-2123 to answer the original post.

quite honestly any of the brand name servos work well and should do you good i would look at something with 125 plus oz tourqe airtronics have always been prettu much bullet proof to me savoxs are nice and are priced resonabale and use futaba parts so are easy to find parts for general matince hitech is making some good stuff they started as a cheap knock of brand 25 years ago but quility has improved dramaticaly over the past few years the asscoaited digital servos are nice but are just a rebranded servo to there specs ould look at them as a lot of team drivers use them in there cars

If may guess which Hitec servo Lee uses, I would say the Hitec HS-7775MG servo (9 kg/cm, 0.10s).

rcaddict, that is the "replacement" for the Sanwa SDX-801/Airtronics 94746M. Stronger, but slower - still equally quick as most other high-end servos.
