Funky diff in my XX4???

3 Attachment(s)
so finally getting around to rebuilding my XX4 WE and noticed this rather strange 'diff' at the front

no ballraces, thrus washers etc. the blue parts are married to the white pulley by screws and are fixed. 2 ballraces sit in the chassis and inside are the blue parts. the outdrives are then place in the blue parts but can only rotate one way. the dogbone is located in the outdrive with a coil spring in between. 2 questions

- what the hell is this thing
- is it better or worse than the conventional diff with plastic outdrives

thanks!

There's your clue right there ;)

nicVEGAchildJR 08-08-2011 09:16 AM

i had one of those, as colmo said it is a one-way diff and i think i got it from lesro models or apex

RC944 08-08-2011 09:19 AM

ok so i got that far being more specific then!

performance wise is it a better or worse diff than the conventional 2 way ballraced one?

That depends on the driver.I use to love my One way diff in my losi but hated the one way in my old zx5

Go figure!! Individual choice mate

ok ive just surfed around given the cost of these things i guess in theory they should be better but in terms of handling do i get more or less speed or control that the standard one?

ive seen then described as offering a more 2wd like drive up front?

This gives you more steering by letting the front wheels run free off throttle, it locks up fully on full throttle, and you'll have no rear brakes. it has a oneway bearing on each side, so each front wheel act independant of the other.

On some tracks it can work, but a diff is by far a safer choice.

RC944 08-08-2011 09:39 AM

superb thanks for that

its for bashing only so im sure ill end up getting it bashed with no brake and less control under power!

Nearly... You'll have no front brakes and all braking at the rear (2wd stylie)

If I remember rightly you need to run CVD's in the front as the std shafts are not upto the extra loads of the oneway.

yep indeed, thats a Lesro one way right there. I ran these across all my xx4's and they are the nuts...oh and virtually bomb proof in use as well

I run one of those one ways always and the car is brilliant on most tracks, just the driver that lets it down!

dibble34 10-08-2011 12:26 PM

Don't you find it the lack of braking an issue with a 1 way?

RC944 10-08-2011 12:48 PM

would it not be the case that only the rear axle brakes so you dont lose it altogether ie 2wd style?

pugboy 11-08-2011 12:59 PM

Braking can be a bit of an issue but i'm not really a slam the anchors on type of driver. I like the feel it gives to the car though overall, just a personal preference really.

RC944 11-08-2011 01:12 PM

im a crap driver but a great basher so for me i expect ill never know any different!

lynx75 23-08-2011 08:25 PM
