Brushed vs Brushless
Just had a look through racer mag and noticed the there are just 3 out of top ten 2wd using brushless, and 1 out of the top 10 ten 4wd at the ifmar world championships.:o
I was about to buy a brushless combo but reading about this has made me think. :o These are the best driver's in the world so why aren't they using the most advanced gear etc. Is Brushless flawed??? ie breaking down to often so they would rather use brushed motors. Everyone seems to be going brushless at the minute so i ask, How many drivers on here have had breakdowns thermals etc. Has brushless technology came out to soon for the amount of power we use and is not stable?? So this is the question a top driver will rag the arse of a buggy lap after lap for 5 minutes, Is this putting to much stress on brushless system campared to a lets say a decent club racer, so is that why most are still using a brushed set up. Let the debate begin :D |
The reason for brushed at the worlds is because it was low grip conditions. Brushless is more aggressive on low throttle than brushed, it suits us well in the UK as everything we have is high grip (even Tiverton & Worksop) compared to what the yanks call low bite.
You'll find the highest brushless was Novak, with the L motors and smaller gauge wire to limit current. Brushless is ace. |
I agree with Chris i've just changed over to brushless and it's so much nicer to use, also no hasle with having to change brushes and skim motors all the time too as you don't need to do any maintenance on the brushless although i have seen a few thermal but i think this was due to poor ventilation on the cars when the surrounding temperature has been high or if the driver has put a too big or too small pinion on. All in all brushless is awsome and i'm never going back down the brushed road.
|
Yep i think brushless is definatley the way forward. They are maintenece free. There seems to be a lot more settings that can be changed on the brushless speedos. I havent thermalled a speedo yet. Or bust a motor.:)

Yup brushless all the way and the onl way to go is red!!!

Why is the only way to go red ash. Is it better or something
|
its magic ;)

Don't start this again we all know that colour doesn't make a difference it's just that blue looks the best as most cars have blue alloy and there's stickers to prove 'Blue is Better' :p LRP speedo and Novak motor has to be the best combo
|
nosram is much cheaper and the red is prettyfull and orion motors are the way to go. yea lol god i love my kit hehe

what happens if you have green bling???
A:eh?::eh?::eh?: |
i'd say brushless is awesome, loads less hassle and maintenabce free. definately worth the buy! although the choice as to which to buy is completely driver preference. i run the lrp speedo with the novak l series motor and would say its ace.

Calling Mr Rotheram... The discussion, like Matt has replied to, is about brushless vs brushed, not which colour your faviourate knickers are |
So far i havent seen you add anythign constructive to the thread.

That's because if I don't have anything decent to say, I keep my mouth shut
|
personally i'm split 50/50 on this.
4wd brushless just cos i got fed up with skimming and re-brushing every other race 2wd i cant justify the expense of a whole new brushless setup when my last checkpoint lasted 1.5 seasons and only had 2 new sets of brushes in its lifetime. I have 3 brushed speedos and the motor gets a skim once / twice a meeting max depending how comitted i am at the time so £180 for the brushless or £60 for a replacement brushed motor with brushes i know i'd rather have the extra £120 for tires and beer. If i was starting from scratch there is very little difference in initial cost but i would choose brushless purely so i dont need the extra expense of a lathe and brushes. |
I went to brushless after starting back racing last year with brushed, and i love it. I have had one motor self destruct but nosram sent a new one very quickly. I would recommend brushless as they are almost maintainance free. I do have an old brushed set up on standby for wet weather racing tho.
Brushless all the way!! |
Ive changed to 100% brushless after testing one in my 2wd. You get a lot more control in the air with it, almost like a 4wd i found and it felt very smooth, not agressive like i expected, but you can be very agressive if you wanted to be. I have gone lrp speedos and Novak motors 6.5light in 2wd and 5.5 sintered in 4wd.

Yes but you just put blu tak or silicon around the end of the motor. The speedos need waterproofing like in the old days as i dont believe they are waterproof.
|
i have found no problems with using mine in the wet, except that it is not water proof and therefore needs more protection. i have found that it is quite agressive compared to my old brushed motors, however that is how i like my cars, and also love driving in the wet [apart from all the cleaning and such :D] i have not yet used my novak L motor in the wet but im sure it will calm things down a bit.
as barnyard said, if you already have Lathes and such then there is no a lot of point in rushing into buying one, but still if you add up the costs of brushes and everything neededin cleaning and replacing worn parts of the brushed motors then, in the long run, a brushless system is a lot more cost efficient especially if you take the opportunity of buying a cheaper second hand one that is near new. Offers like this also become available in the forsale section of the site. hope this has helped you |
