Vintage ESC motor limit?
 
I have a vintage Nosram ESC; Advanced FET controller, I think it was called. It was Nosram's first product launched in the 80's.

It was the previous version of this:

(the only difference was mine has a heat shrink case rather than the nice hard plastic case).

I've email Nosram but it got ignored :( so I'm hoping someone here knows what the motor wind limit is on this as I only ever ran it with 27 turns in the standard class.

I have magazines from the period stating some people are using as low as 16/17 turns or so, but these are old motors and also using old cells.

I'd like to know what modern equipment I could use it with without melting it.

You'll have been ignored by Nosram as the only connection between the original and the new company is the name.

For modern motors if you want to keep on using the ESC I'd limit it to a 19 turn and you should be okay.

I remember them and I ran some crazy motors (for the time) on mine and regularly melted the relay closed.

I agree with Terry, if you want it to be reliable (bare in mind Nosram won't fix it for you if it blows) don't go faster than a 19 turn, especially if you are going to run modern cells as they are infinately more powerfull than the 1400 scr's and 1700 scrc's that were around back then.

I'm not even sure I'd put a modern 19t with modern cells through it to be honest, the 19t I have in my RC10 is quite 'Juicy'

Yes, I think a 27T would be a better bet. My 19T powered cars now, combined with 4200 cells, are probably quicker than the 13-turn motors and 1700 cells I was using in the era of the "original" Nosram speedos.

Thanks for your thoughts. Maybe I'll stick with 27T?

I would only be wanting to use it in a vintage series anyway if one ever happens in the Midlands (to be more authentic). I'd rather not risk melting it and the gearbox and chain in my optima might not like anything much more powerful anyway.

I wouldn't worry about the Optimas gearboxes, I run a 12 turn in mine:D

The ESC wouldn't handle that though!

wow, that is a classic! remember those when they came out! mmm,i think the 27t with modern cells would be wise.
