That 35W slipstream one is fine when at the track and out of the wind....but for indoor use get yourself an 80W Weller with an 10mm chisel tip.

For a 12v soldering iron, it's a bit more money at £40 but the one that SPEC Racing do is 50w and comes with a longlife tip too. It's the same as the one WASP did (SPEC bought WASP) and my soldering iron is still going strong after 12 years.

Do they still make those Tamiya 7.2V ones that heat up in about 15 seconds? The tip went funny on my own years ago and i dunno where its disappeared to :S

matdodd 15-12-2007 07:26 PM

They do Danny but they dont send them to the eu!

Danny McGee 16-12-2007 09:20 PM

How gay! so theres no way of getting one sent here? What about someone buys me ones then posts it too me?

matdodd 16-12-2007 10:44 PM

I was told Tamiya didnt want to go through the hassle of geting them through eu regulation tests to sell over here! You could probably get one from over there though mate.

I tried that a long time ago, and it was not even close to hot enough I'm afraid. You'd have to use really thin solder to be able to use it for sure!

Those solder stations look very tempting, but also very expensive. In any case look at the W reading, it's still gotta be enough!

And one thing is a "new solder". Re-soldering old ones are much more of a hassle! (needs to be hotter)

A 230V iron it is then and a generator:woot::thumbsup:

ashleyb4 02-04-2008 01:23 PM

Lee if your going to get a 230v soldering iron get a wellar one they are truly amazing! I had the same problem as you wanted the advantage of 12v so i could use it outdoor track side so i gotmyself a power inverter. which turned 12v to 130v magic.
