Old tyres, the new tyre?
 

How about this for a cost effective simple idea, every member has at least one set of old tyres. Cut all the remaining spikes off and run them as slicks, perhaps this could be tried for one round and see what the differnce is. Very simple thing to do and will cost nothing.
