The actual cable is std usb to mini usb (if that is the correct terminology). Do you have the adaptor that plugs into the esc receiver plug? If not and you bought it new you should be able to get one from castle f.o.c.

There are two separate things, a field link which allows basic changes without a laptop, and the main link that allows firmware updates and more detailed changes (throttle curves etc.) that needs a laptop.
